Above the Sea of Fog

As the world went hungry, it bred much conflict among the people. The world had changed since it was torn apart. The air was filled with poison and the earth eroded into endless impassable marshes. Nations scattered for the sake of self-preservation. Panic seized the masses upon realizing the fact all their resources were waning.

Those who had the most resources, naturally controlled the earth, and they made all those who came to them work on their plantations. They worked like slaves, in hopes of a mouthful of food from their rulers who now lived in the sky.

Some slaves wandered alone or gathered into smaller groups. They hunted in the wild or plundered crops from their owners using stolen equipment and weaponry. The dissented slaves attacked their rulers in the sky by becoming invisible on the ground. They took down any resistance they met from their rulers carefully one by one.

--

I started working on this painting slowly back in april 2007. There was a lot of dead time during the process. I had so many different ideas; some derived from older work I've done, and some who I haven't finished yet. It finally turned into this, which is a story about hunger and evolution - perhaps more about revolution.

The light and color scheme has been very challenging and experimental to me. I spent hours studying light. My eyes are tired. It is like an opposite of everything. Some of you might also recognize the weird influence by the good old Caspar David

This is a digital painting using mostly two base colours; red and blue. I decided to go for a more rough and brushed look. Makes it look more surreal and distorted. I've experienced that the brushed surface gives the image another dimension that goes 'deeper' behind the it. This way the more important parts stand out more I think.

What are these sketches to me, what are them to you, I can’t really tell. They testify the great horror surrounding me everyday. It is a feeling, an essence, a too realistic, almost pessimistic caricature of people who will eat you in every way and gesture. Maybe not every gesture, but if you know what I mean, you know what I mean..

I painted it in Photoshop using only one layer.

Virtuoso Violence

A photo manipulated piece which I, with a sense of irony, categorize as "full metal expressionistic". The model is a friend of mine, and the gun and bow was something I found in an antique store. We shot about 100 images which I later picked out about 20 and composed them all together in photoshop

It was quite a hard piece which took over a year to complete. Not that I sat and worked on it for one year, but the concept, feelings and dreams about it never really got into shape. But I finally think I got it right.

It's quite entertaining to look at, because I've used a few optical effects to resemble depth in an untraditional way. "Usually" we blur something that is supposed to be in the background like a macro lens effect. Here I've kind of made "art for two eyes". When focusing on an object in front of you, notice the background look doubled. This technique was partly inspired by the theory of anaglyphical illusions (red/green 3d goggles). However this is without any plug-ins.. It doesn't make it look directly 3d, but I think it gives a sense of shaky movement because of the unexpected composition.

Original size: A2 (300dpi)
Tools: Canon and Wacom

Ghost in the Shell painting

Fan art inspired by the movie Ghost in the Shell (1995) all respect to Mamoru Oshii and Masamune Shirow for their great inspirations.

Painted during some free time just for relax and nostalgia. I was very impressed by that insane scene where Motoko fights this large tank.

I've played around with coloristic ideas, hope you not get too offended by them.

I know its a detailed film, so I tried to keep up with that. This was really a tricky piece for me, but I've had fun with it.
I originally posted this to the Master and servant challenge.. but I never really finished it completely until now. I recently grabbed the project again and made a decent revised version of it. I got the idea when just staring at a person who was talking. There arent much between an individual personality expressing life and the shell made of bones and flesh. But looking at an empty body without soul creeps me.

A Dive Into The Past

How do we remember a year?
You divide a year into 12 months,
52 weeks and 365 days.
After a year has past, it doesn't exist anymore.
But there are still pieces of it within us, and you
can easily travel back to that year by listening
to old music, wear some old clothes or just think
nostalgic. Time only depends on who is and what
happens around you.
My version of time is that we are all living in the same boat
and the water its floating on is rising.
We know we can't fly off the boat and into the future, but we
can allways dive into the past..
However the deeper we go, the darker and more faded our memories are.
However some memories will never be forgotten in the great sea,
because they have written history. Yesterday I found an old letter written by me.
That was my history
Text and illustration from an essay I wrote about memories.
Drawed in Photoshop using a wacom tablet
Also used some stockphotos for the background and bubbles..
I kind of like the result of mixing photos and comics like this
would love to have some critics on it
